Children's Picture Book:
A safe, playful, and curious exploration of different family origins and compositions. A singular message: all families are real, no matter their design.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Finding Family was written to enhance inclusivity and representation in children's literature with respect to familial diversity. It explores and validates the many different ways in which family connection and belonging can be forged.
The language used in Finding Family is carefully crafted to spark curiosity, invite conversation, and support emotionally safe reflection. The narrative affirms the legitimacy of families formed through circumstances other than DNA and birth ties, while also acknowledging the importance that these ties can hold.
Similarly, Finding Family's illustrations have been intentionally designed through a trauma-informed lens to metaphorically reflect and extend the text, while steering away from fixed ideas about family structure, gender stereotypes, and cultural appropriation.
Finding Family deliberately avoids prescribing how families should be created or what they should look like. Instead, it makes space for readers to form insights meaningful to the context of their own lives. In so doing, Finding Family affirms that families of a different design to one's own are no less real, connected, or valid. Developing this interpersonal awareness supports safe and respectful interactions.
